Teos yhdistää asiantuntijoiden havaintoja ja tutkimustuloksia rikollisen elämäntavan jättäneiden ihmisten omiin kokemuksiin. Rikosten tekemisen taustalta löytyy yleensä monia altistavia tekijöitä eikä vain yhtä selkeää syytä.<br><br>Kirjassa haastatellaan rikostaustaisia ihmisiä, jotka ovat kohdanneet tekonsa ja päättäneet elää rikoksetonta elämää. Heidän kertomuksensa auttavat lukijaa ymmärtämään taustoja ja motiiveja, jotka liittyvät yleisimmin rikosten tekemiseen. Esimerkiksi päihteet, väkivalta ja lapsuuden turvattomuus liittyvät usein lain rikkomiseen. Kirjailija Nadia Sandhu valottaa rikollisuuden syitä myös tutkimustiedon ja asiantuntijoiden haastatteluiden avulla. <br><br>Tilastollisesti rikollisuus on vähentynyt pitkällä aikavälillä, mutta viime vuosina esimerkiksi henkirikosten määrä on kasvanut. Tutkimalla syitä myös rikosten ennaltaehkäisy voi helpottua. Rikosten juuret pohtii lisäksi rangaistusten tehoa sekä rikoskierteen katkaisemista.<br><br>FL Nadia Sandhu on tietokirjailija ja toimittaja, joka lähestyy rikollisuutta ilmiönä journalistisella otteella.
